Brynn Schwartz, Associate Editor-in-Chief

On Monday, Feb. 14, Pine Trails Park will host a community commemoration in honor of the 17 victims of the Feb. 14, 2018 tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the affected MSD community. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Pine Trails Park has held similar events every year since 2018. The event is open to the general public.

The City of Parkland will livestream the events for viewers who cannot attend the event in person on their social media pages. This includes their Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

“The event will include therapy dogs on-site, a memory wall displaying photos of the victims, an area to write messages, a brief commemoration ceremony, a video honoring the victims and a drum circle,” a statement by the City of Parkland said.

The commemoration ceremony itself will be conducted by spiritual leaders, with the video immediately following. The ceremony and video will take place in the City of Parkland Amphitheatre.

The city expects heavy traffic around Pine Trails Park and encourages people to carpool and exercise caution when driving.

Support services will be available on-site starting at 5:30 p.m. and the City of Parkland has provided contact information for mental health resources.
