AP Government teacher Jeffrey Foster wrote the book “For Which We Stand: How Our Government Works and Why It Matters.” Scholastic released the book on Sept. 1. The non-fiction book is targeted toward 8 to 12-year-olds to educate readers on the importance of getting involved in government and understanding how it works. 

After spending over eight months writing the piece, Foster takes pride in what he created with Scholastic, with the project exceeding his initial expectations.

“I am extremely proud of the product that we produced,” Foster said. “It’s beyond what I imagined when I initially committed to writing the book.”

Currently, the book is being sold online at Target, Amazon and Scholastic, as well as in-person at all major book outlets.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” Foster said. “Kids from 6 to 70-year-olds have all commented that the book is for all ages and should be required reading for anyone trying to understand how the government works and how you can become involved in the political process.”

Many of Foster’s students believe his years of experience as an educator qualifies him to write a book on this topic.

“He has been a teacher for an extended period of time and has experience and knowledge of politics because of it,” senior Moises Cobo said. “I am happy for him that he got his book released and wish him the best.”

Senior Roni Paz feels the release seems like a step in the right direction for Foster.

“I think it’s great that Mr. Foster is writing his own book,” Paz said. “He is clearly well-versed in the topic of government, and it seems like a great opportunity.”

The concept of the book was inspired by what he teaches his students at school. Foster prioritizes preparing future voters, which for him means ensuring that they are fully equipped with knowledge regarding the governmental system and are involved in it.

“My goal is the same as it is when teaching my class, to get citizens to stop complaining about government and start participating in the process,” Foster said.

In the future, Foster would be open to writing another book; however, he is currently unsure of what the topic of it would be on.
