After a great season with a 14-5-1 record, MSD found itself in a hole, down one game to zero to North Broward Prep in a best of three series for the district championship.
MSD started this game at 8:45 p.m. at The Ice Den.
By the time the clock hit 10 p.m., the game and MSD’s district season are over.
The tally of this match was a 6-2 loss, similar to the 5-2 loss of the previous night’s game also against NBP.
“We have a bitter rivalry with those guys over there and quite honestly, losing to them hurts. It’s even worse when it’s the playoffs and two nights in a row as well,” senior Sam Hendler (13) said.
After a tie, that MSD almost won, earlier in the year, there was hope that North Broward wasn’t impossible to beat this year.
However, the shellacking that NBP handed the Eagles these last two nights proves that the foe is just simply on another level of competition.
Even though MSD did not win the district, they had already qualified for the state competition by making it to the championship game. Winners and runner-up both attend.
So, while Stoneman Douglas is going to have an extremely uphill battle, their season is not over just yet.
All told, MSD won sixteen games this entire season and lost only seven. That is nothing to be ashamed of for this hockey program and is definitely something to build off of going into states and next year’s season.
The playoffs will take place on Feb. 21 and 22 in Estero, Florida.
