The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School wrestling team placed fifth in the Broward County Athletics Association (BCAA) tournament on Saturday, Jan. 30. Cardinal Gibbons High School placed first, Cypress Bay High School placed second and St. Thomas Aquinas High School placed third.

“This was the first time in over 10 years that the Eagles [brought] home a team award from the BCAA,” coach Ken Gendason said.

Many MSD athletes placed during the BCAA tournament. Josh Frais placed second, losing 7-2 to Cardinal Gibbons’ Jertavis Black, who won the BCAA Outstanding Wrestler Award.

Precautions were also taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19, with referees and spectators wearing masks and face shields.

“The Eagles had to hold off Fort Lauderdale and Western to take 5th,” Gendason said. “Both of those teams defeated the Eagles in recent weeks.”

Seniors Fenthon Aristhomene and Daniel Alvarez also represented MSD at the tournament, both placing seventh. Freshman Tyler Lowe, Donovan Ott and Andres Alvarez capped things off with an eighth place title.

This was a historic season for the team as a whole since they brought home a team award with their fifth place award, managing to do this during the COVID-19 pandemic.
