College has been defined in many different ways: a place for higher education, an experience that allows people to grow, and a place that creates opportunities. However, as graduation approaches, many of the seniors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas will be able to define what college means for themselves. To increase college readiness, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School administration planned increasing opportunities for students to meet with admissions directors and to attend information sessions for colleges all over the nation. Representatives from various colleges throughout the USA will be visiting MSD school in order to meet and talk to prospective students.
These college visits allow students to gain more information about the colleges that they can attend. Students are able to ask direct questions to the representatives of the college of their choice, as well as find out more about other colleges.
“It’s really an opportunity for the students to meet the person who, most likely, will be evaluating their application,” BRACE advisor Eunice Ramirez said. “It’s also a great way to learn more about the school, especially for those schools that [students] cannot visit.”
College visits will be held from September 9 through November 3 in either room 127, the BRACE room, or the auditorium.
“The earlier you start [preparing], the better it is, I believe it starts in ninth grade really,” said Ramirez. “Having that mindset that your high school years are the most important years of your life in the sense that it is when you build your GPA so that you are ready to apply to colleges.”
In addition to college visits, MSD will offers other resources in the future, such as college panels. Also, there will be a school-sponsored college tour taking place November 14, 15 and 16, bringing students to FSU,UCF, USF and FGCU. The program Naviance is another way students can prepare for college, as it has information about students GPA, test scores, and colleges that may fit the students.
