In January of this year, Disney Channel star Olivia Rodrigo released her debut single “Driver’s License.” Little did she know that it would become the number one song on the planet shortly after its release. A few months later, she would surprise fans with a brand new song titled “Deja Vu.”

In the past, many actors and actresses from Disney Channel have formed careers in music, such as Sabrina Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. Rodrigo has made her way onto the list of Disney actors turned musicians after releasing her first single, and now she has become the top actress on the entire list.

Since the release of the song on Thursday, April 1, the official music video for deja vu has amassed over 18 million views on YouTube in only a few days. On the second day that the song was officially released, it became number 3 on the U.S. Billboard chart and number 8 on the Global Spotify chart.

The song starts where her last song “Driver’s License” ended. Rodrigo begins by having thoughts about how her ex is moving on with his life and how she is becoming a faint memory to him. Seeing their relationship play out publicly, she finds herself comparing all the things they did to how he is now doing them. She even questions what else he’s changed from their relationship.

In the pre-chorus of the song, Rodrigo sings, “So when you gonna tell her that we did that too? She thinks it’s special, but it’s all reused. That was the show we talked about. Played you the songs she’s singing now when she’s with you.” These lines in specific are the simple truth about moving on after a breakup and how one’s past significant other may be living their life fine without you.

Rodrigo starts off the song in a very soft, almost shy voice, which resembles another indie-pop singer, Billie Eilish. The later addition of guitars and drums creates a full song.

Once again, Rodrigo has proved to everyone that she is multi-talented and definitely not a one-hit-wonder.

With her debut album slated for May 21, she’s truly making 2021 her year and giving listeners an honest and vulnerable insight to her coming-of-age era.
