On Thursday, Sept. 28, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas men’s bowling team played against Coral Springs Charter at Sawgrass Lanes. They previously played and won against Taravella High School on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and hoped to continue winning and keep their momentum going.
“We have been practicing to perfect our craft, which gets us ready for every game,” coach De Erika Carter said. “Most of our student athletes are also involved in weekend bowling club tournaments.”
The Eagles entered the match short three team members, and had only four starters in attendance. Despite this, the Eagles were able to strategize and revise the order of their players,
The first game began with a solid start, with all the parents and students cheering for their team. After several frames with strikes and spares performed by the team, they defeated Coral Springs Charter in the first match with a total of 784 pins.
“It wasn’t one of my best, but I feel like today it was kind of weird because we didn’t have three of our team members here with us today,” junior Vincent Ciullo said. “And so we kind of had to fix our lineup a little bit to accommodate for it.”
The second game started off with a majority of the team scoring a strike in the first frame. Both schools took turns taking the lead, but the Eagles were able to get ahead as they scored 23 strikes as a team. With sophomore Bryce Gregory having six strikes, making him the highest scorer for the second game, they took the lead by 49 pins and defeated Charter once again with a total of 857 pins.
The final game was baker-style, a single line is shared by the whole team. After starting off with a few spares and a strike, the team fell behind to Charter. In the end, they failed to get ahead and lost the baker match with a score of 148. But with the combined total of all three games, the final score turned out to be 1789 pins, resulting in favor of the Eagles.
“We did good considering we only had four starters, so yeah I’m not mad about how we did today, we won, so that’s good,” senior Collin Oliphant said.
With another victorious win by the men’s bowling team, they’re hoping to continue their winning streak and keep their rank in the county. The next bowling event is the Broward County Bowling Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 9 A.M. at the SpareZ bowling alley in Davie.
