The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School varsity football team played Cooper City High School on Monday Sept. 30 at 6 p.m., resulting in MSD’s fifth loss of the season.
The first quarter started with a play by the Cooper City Cowboys, followed by an incomplete pass and another throw. Later, during the Cowboy’s possession of the ball in the first quarter, quarterback Jake Albano (14) almost intercepted the ball. Unfortunately, the ball dropped instead.
In the next play the Cowboy’s completed a field goal, placing them in the lead, with MSD trailing three points behind. The score at this point in the game was 7-10.
The second quarter opened with linebacker Keegan Lake (45) making a run play against the Cowboys. Lake tackled a player on the other team. Then, after another first down, the Cowboys scored a touchdown, as well as an extra point, making the score 17-7.
The MSD Eagles’ next possession of the ball began with a completed pass to wide receiver Grant Grubor (5). The Cowboys received a foul for pass interference, providing the Eagles offense with a first down.
“The offense has to improve on moving the ball and protecting the quarterback,” running back Cristian Blanco (35) said. “We will make this adjustment by showing up to practice and putting in the work.”
The next play was called offsides on the Cowboys, resulting in a five yard penalty with seven minutes remaining on the clock for the second quarter.
The Eagles had a false start repeating the second down. During the next play wide receiver Ethan Senko (1) made an exciting catch after the ball bounced off of Grubor.
The ball was subsequently overturned to the Eagles with one minute remaining in the third quarter. Shortly after, running back Anthony Diaz (3) completed a pass, marking the end of this quarter.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Eagles were losing; however, they kept their spirits up and continued to play the game with full effort.
“As a defense we forced fumbles and made good tackles on the ball,” defensive end Marc St. Fort (99) said. “We can improve as a team by keeping our heads up even when we are losing.”
The fourth quarter began with the Eagles on offense and wide receiver Grubor dropped a pass that the opposing team almost intercepted. Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Eagles’ quarterback Jaxon Anger (18) got injured after being sacked.
Wide receiver Johnny Debs (19) scored a touchdown, ending the game with a final score of 15-24, in favor of the Cowboys.
The Eagles’ next game will be on Friday, Oct. 4 against Coral Glades High School, and as they prepare for the game they remain hopeful that they will secure a win.
