The 89th annual Academy Awards were presented on Feb. 26. The event consisted of great laughs from the wonderful host, Jimmy Kimmel, as he filled the stage with political comedy and other jokes.
The film “La La Land” was tied as the most nominated movie with fourteen nominations, it got as high as “The Titanic” and “All About Eve.” In total, “La La Land” won five Academy Awards, Emma Stone winning Best Actress, and Daniel Chazelle becoming the youngest actor at 32 to win Best Director. ThBest Original Music Score was rewarded to Justin Hurwitz, Best Cinematography to Linus Sandgren and Best Production Design Sandy Reynolds-Wasco. Many were in shock when Ryan Gosling did not receive an Oscar in one of his most successful movies yet.
“Moonlight” came in second place this year, being that it was nominated in eight categories and won four. After an innocent mistake in the envelope given to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway where “Lala Land” was seen to have won Best Picture. The truth of the matter was that Dede Gardner, Adele Romanski and Jeremy Kleiner took home the Best Picture award for “Moonlight.” Best Supporting Actor was awarded to Mahershala Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay to Barry Jenkins.
Another memorable movie at this year’s Academy Awards was “Manchester by the Sea” who captivated the audience with the great acting of Casey Affleck. Affleck won the Best Actor in Leading Role in the film directed by Matt Damon and also achieved Best Original Screenplay for Kenneth Lonergan’s work.
The actress in a supporting role when to Viola Davis for her role in “Fences” as Rose Maxon, the wife of Troy Maxon played by Denzel Washington, who was also nominated for awards at the Oscars.
Five music performances were given on the night of the 89th Academy Awards. Justin Timberlake gave an enthusiastic start to the night when he preformed his top hit song, “Can’t Stop The Feeling.” Sting gave an amazing guitar solo when he graced the audience with, “The Empty Chair.” John Legend gave two great preformances when he had back-up dancers while preforming two “Lala Land’s” songs, “Audition” and “City of Stars.” Auliʻi Cravalho sang a solo from her recent movie, “Moana,”, called “How Far I’ll Go.”
