On Oct. 24, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School women’s cross country team competed at Districts. This meet was held at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek and started at 4:30 p.m. Some of the schools that competed included Coral Springs High School, Monarch High School and Coral Glades High School.
The top three teams from Districts go to Regionals, and then the top six from Regionals go to States. The MSD women’s team won first place and are now the district champions. Team captain Alyssa Fletcher came in first place with a time of 20:59.
“I’m super proud of everyone stepping it up to do well in this district meet,” Fletcher said.
Junior Gabby Rumasuglia finished with a time of 21:20. Junior Jesika Van Welie came in shortly after with a time of 21:50. Junior Kayla Sanseverino finished with a time of 23:04. Sophomore Annagrace Myers finished two minutes later with a time of 25:03.
“It went really well because the girls came first overall and we beat Coral Springs by one point, and the boys came second overall,” Miguel said. “A lot of people from our team placed and won medals.”
The team had a total of 30 points, and the average time was 22:27.
The weather was gray and cloudy. Brief showers and winds occurred around the park, and the air was humid and hot.
“The weather was overcast and humid, not good running weather,” coach Scott Beigel said.
The season is close to ending, and the team has kept a constant winning streak. The team trains for numerous hours in the heat and works hard to accomplish their goals.
“The season has gone really well; the girls have been consistently finishing in the top three,” Beigel said. “They train really hard in the heat, and I’ve definitely [seen] improvement.”
The team will be continuing on to Regionals then hopefully be on their way to States. They will keep training and working hard to beat personal records and times.
The next meet will take place at South County Regional Park on Nov. 2, starting at 4:00 p.m.
