“The Irregulars” shocks viewers

Released on Netflix on March 26, The Irregulars features a crew of misfits who investigate a series of supernatural crimes in Victorian London for Dr. Watson and his shadowy associate, Sherlock Holmes.

The new television series, ‘The Irregulars,’ premiered on Netflix on March 26, 2021. There were 8 episodes released based on crime, drama and the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

“The Irregulars” was created by Tom Bidwell who is both an accomplished writer and producer. Known for the enormously successful films “Katy” and “My Mad Fat Diet,” Bidwell hoped to appeal to fans of the famous Sherlock Holmes book series.

The baker street irregulars are a spinoff with the universe of the Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock universe. The show follows a group of teens as they team up with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to perform a top-secret operation.

“The Irregulars” are shown as a group of street kids led by Bea (Thaddea Graham). Bea’s younger sister Jessie (played by Darci Shaw), Spike (McKell David), Billy (Jojo Macari) and Leo (Harrison Osterfield). Jessie is known for having unusual yet terrifying nightmares which serve as the basis for her character. The troubled adolescents are approached by Holmes’ partner John Watson (Royce Pierreson) and asked to find information for Holms (Henry Llyod-Hughes). Bea is intrigued and accepts this offer in exchange for money which she and her sister desperately need.

As the group begins to research for Holmes, they realize that the help requested is not as it seems. They soon discover that there are supernatural forces involved. The group of friends forms an extremely close bond. As the series progresses, it becomes very evident that the group would do anything to keep each other safe. However, like many series following teenagers, the group does not always get along. This results in drama between many of the characters, which definitely helps to enhance the series.

The hour-long episodes do not cover just one mystery, but numerous. Bidwell chose to focus on one individual mystery per episode. Therefore diversifying the show and giving viewers something new and exciting to look forward to as they navigate through the series. As each mystery is solved, more information is revealed.

The characters slowly realize what is allowing people to have supernatural powers. Bidwell also makes sure to engage the audience and fill them in on each of the character’s backstories.

On the other hand, some viewers may be disappointed as many were looking forward to the connection between the series and Sherlock Holmes. However, the show barely has a connection to the books. Sherlock Holmes does not play a large role in the show as it mostly revolves around Bea and her friends.

Despite the lack of Holmes, “The Irregulars” was one of the most-watched series during the week of its release and continued to be on the charts for two weeks after.

The series was renewed for a second season before the season one premiere. Netflix plans for the release to be late 2021 or early 2022.
