Juniors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School began parking in the senior lot as of the 2024-2025 school year. Many seniors have lost their senior privilege due to breaking the 10-10-10 rule, consequently opening parking spots for juniors.
MSD’s 10-10-10 rule outlines that students can have a maximum of 10 sign-outs, 10 sign-ins and 10 absences per school year in order to be eligible for senior privilege. Senior privilege entails a senior student being able to have a parking spot in the senior lot and an off-campus study hall.
Since many seniors broke the 10-10-10 rule last school year, parking spots in the senior lot became available this year. Thus, the school decided to offer the parking spots to juniors who did qualify.
“Senior privilege and senior parking are two different things,” Assistant Principal Sandra Davis said. “Students can lose their senior parking through disciplinary infraction such as if they have too many sign-ins and sign-outs or absences.”
The main reason students strive to earn senior privilege is because of the benefits that come with it. Since those with senior privilege have a parking spot in the senior lot and have an off-campus study hall, they can exit school earlier with less parking congestion and have more time at home to complete schoolwork.
“I enjoy having a parking spot at the school,” junior Omer Bishri said. “I had to follow the 10-10-10 rule extra carefully to secure this spot. In the end it was worth it because I can get to school and leave more easily and sometimes even carpool with my friends which can be better for traffic.”
Juniors had to fill out a form to apply for a spot. There were requirements in addition to having not broken the 10-10-10 rule, including having a grade point average of 2.0 or higher, as well as no outstanding obligations.
Juniors are being extra careful when it comes to the 10-10-10 rule this year so that they can secure senior privilege next year. It gives them the opportunity to park in the senior lot for the first time, or continue parking in the senior lot depending on whether they have had a spot this year or not. Overall, many juniors are appreciative towards the school for allowing them to park in the senior lot.
