The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School women’s varsity soccer team won their first home game 1-0 against Cypress Bay High School on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The game took place at Cumber Stadium at 6 p.m.
The game began with the Eagles having the ball, and both teams went back and forth with possession. MSD goalie Ella Stevens (1) blocked a close shot, and then the Cypress Bay goalie blocked two close shots from centerback Sophia Dal Molin (4) and midfielder Taylor Le (21).
“I was really hoping to be able to score today, but I’m super proud of how we played,” Le said.
The score remained 0-0 throughout the 45 minutes of the first half. During halftime, the team re-grouped to come up with a plan for the second half.
“We maintain strong communication and teamwork by establishing goals for the game ahead of time and using encouraging words on the field to uplift each other,” Dal Molin said.
The second half found both teams re-energized and ready to play. Following a penalty on MSD, Cypress Bay took a penalty kick that Stevens narrowly caught.
With 38 minutes left, forward Breanna Gordon (22) kicked the ball to a Cypress Bay defender. The defender passed it to the goalie, who missed the recovery, which counted as a goal for MSD. The score became 1-0 in favor of MSD.
Cypress Bay attempted to fight back with two more close shot attempts, including one via a penalty kick. Stevens blocked both.
Dal Molin received a penalty kick with 18 minutes left in the game. Her kick was received by forward Courtney Haymach (24), who attempted a shot at goal that was ultimately blocked by the Cypress Bay goalie.
Though the team was proud of their performance in a competitive game, they hoped to create a larger margin of victory. Ultimately, the game ended with a score of 1-0.
“It all starts with team dinner the night before,” Dal Molin said. “These dinners allow us to socialize and expand our connection with each other so that it translates onto the field. Before the game time, we make sure to hydrate well and get a good warmup.”
The team looks forward to improving their performance in every game, with the hopes of making it to states.
