The Eagles 1 hockey team won their home game 6-5 in a competitive match against the Westside High School Mutts on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 9:15 p.m. at the Panthers Ice Den.
The game kicked off with the Mutts scoring slightly over a minute in. However, they were not in the lead for very long. Two minutes later, forwards Calvin Medwid (22) and João Pedro Alves (98) assisted forward Von Seys (28) in scoring a goal, balancing the score.
“We worked very hard by getting quick shifts and getting the pucks in deep as well as playing very physical,” Seys said.
Forward Micheal Rozenblat (29) got a two minute penalty for slashing four minutes before the end of the period. The Mutts then scored two goals on the Eagles, and they ended the period 1–3.
“We gotta come out better in the first,” Rozenblat said. “The starts we’ve been having have not been good.”
During the second period, the Eagles were on the offensive, with Seys scoring another goal within the first five minutes.
Seys’ goal was followed by another by Alves, assisted by forward Brandon Jones (97), making the scores equal once again. Then, Alves scored for the second time that evening, after being assisted by forwards Medwid and Slater Szirovatka (27).
Following this, forwards Jones and Oleksandr Onyshchenko (87) both got two minute penalties. Jones’ was for roughing while Onyshchenko’s was for holding. However, goalie Brandon Trokey (1) made numerous saves throughout the period, cutting off the Mutt’s first period lead. The Eagles ended the period on top with a lead of 4–3.
The Mutts opened the third period with four minor penalties, before netting a puck to level the score for the third time that night.
Seven minutes in, Seys scored another goal on the power play, achieving a hat trick. Soon after, defenseman Carter Alonso (21) scored a goal with an assist by Medwid, giving the Eagles a two point lead.
“I played good offensively, but better defensively,” Alonso said.
Nevertheless, two minutes before the period ended, the Mutts scored again, ending the game with a 6-5 win by the Eagles.
“This is the best hockey I think I’ve seen this team play,” Trokey said. “As long as we keep shifts short and are not selfish, we can win.”
The Eagles are now 1–0–0 in the Red Division playoffs, putting them second to thCypress Bay High School Lightning. Their next game is at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3 against the Lightning.
