On Sept. 17 the mens varsity cross country team ran one of their most important meets of the season. The city meet took place in Tradewinds park, starting at 4:30 p.m. The MSD Eagles ran against six competitive teams running for the city championship title.

The mens team easily ran their way into first place, taking the title of the Northwest Community Classic Boys Champions. The Eagles were led into victory by senior, Jorge Zapata with a winning time of 18:20. MSD filled up five out of the top ten places with ease.

“It feels great to win the meet.” senior Jorge Zapata said. “Throughout the race, my teammates and friends from other teams pushed me to run the fastest I can. We all want the best for each other.”

The city meet has been a way for teams to see how they will perform in Regionals for many years. The top ten teams in the region make it to the state competition in Tallahassee.

“In this race, I was happy with how I performed. The weather conditions were nice compared to other meets since the sun was covered.” freshman Walker Greep said. “ I just expect to keep on improving, and with the help of my coach and teammates I believe my overall expectations will come true.”

The meet brought many new personal records that helped contribute to the winning score of 23, with the average time consisting of an 18:47 for the Eagles.

“I felt proud of our team becoming back-to-back city champions. I believe that this had set a very good tone for future races, and continues pushing us to strive for greatness.” junior, Alex Miller said. “We ran on a not very fast course, as the grass was very high and hard to run on. Summer conditioning helped us greatly to run in these conditions, but I’m very excited for the rest of the season.”

The MSD Eagles’ next meet will take place on Sept. 21 located at Boca South County Park. The invitational meet will start at 8:00 a.m.
