Junior Mikey Fierstat (26) soars through the air over four STA players to shoot for the goal. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Eagles faced St. Thomas Aquinas in the finals of the 2024 FHSAA Boys Lacrosse District Tournament on April 12.

MSD men’s varsity lacrosse team falls short to St. Thomas Aquinas High School

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School varsity lacrosse team played against St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Friday, April 12, for the FHSAA District Tournament. The game took place at St. Thomas Aquinas. The Eagles fell short as the game ended in a score of 21-2.

After a huge win for the Eagles against the West Boca Raton High School Bulls on Wednesday, April 10, the Eagles continued their season. After running through the first round of the district tournament, the Eagles looked promising with their 7-6 record. The Eagles were coming off a six game winning streak and were ready to show their improvement to St. Thomas since their last visit with a score of 20-6 on March 6.

Once the game started, St. Thomas came out swinging by scoring 18 goals in the first half. The Eagles defense struggled to stop the play and hit the attackers for a goal. The goalie from St. Thomas was playing a great game by stopping the Eagles shots.

“It was a very disappointing first half, as me and my team thought we were going to put up a challenge against St. Thomas,” midfielder Michael Cacace (15) said.

Throughout the game, the faceoffs were a huge struggle for the Eagles, as they came up with limited returns. After receiving many faceoffs in the Eagles last game, it was a big difference for the team.

By the end of the third quarter, the Eagles were able to finally put one in from attacker Darren Edenbaum (1). Although the goal hyped the team up, it seemed to be too late for a comeback. The energy flowed over to left side striker Mikey Fierstat (26) as he scored one more goal for the Eagles. The game ended with a score of 21-2 as the Eagles began to head home.

“It was a rough way to go out, but I’m proud of how my team played this year,” Edenbaum said.

The Eagles will play one last game to finish off the season for a rematch against St. Thomas, and they hope to bring home one last win on April 26.
