The Eagles 1 hockey team played against the Spanish River High School Bullsharks on Mon., Nov. 3 at the Baptist Health Iceplex in Fort Lauderdale. The game ended in a tie, with six points each.
The game began with the Eagles taking the lead. Within the first five minutes, forward Sianu Hogue (3) scored, starting the game off strong.
“That first goal gave us a lot of energy to start the game,” Hogue said.
Soon after, forward Oleksandr Onyshchenko (87) scored with six minutes left of the period, making the score 2-0. Then, the team scored again, putting the score at 3-0.
Just as the period was about to end with Eagles 1 in the lead, Spanish River scored a goal. The final score of the first period was 3-1; from here, the Bullsharks slowly caught up.
Two minutes into the second period, the Bullsharks scored a goal. With communication and teamwork from the Eagles, though, defenseman Zachary Brill (4) scored, making the score 4-2.
“I think our communication on the ice is good, but there’s always room for improvement,” defenseman David Korenblit (73) said. “As the season goes on, I think our communication will keep getting better.”
With four minutes left of the second period, Korenblit got a penalty for tripping. Then, with four seconds left of the period, the team scored, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Eagles.
The Bullsharks started the third period off by scoring in the first two minutes. Despite heightened effort from both teams, the Bullsharks managed to score again, putting the score at 5-4.
The Bullsharks subsequently tied the score at 5-5 by making another goal with seven minutes remaining in the period. With the match so close, forward and defenceman Lilia Tomilin (23) scored to give the Eagles the lead.
The final minute of the game was a heated match. While the clock ran down, the Eagles and Bullsharks worked hard to score the winning goal. As the clock neared zero, Spanish River took the final shot and made it, leaving the game tied 6-6 between the two teams.
“The team played pretty well overall. We worked hard and kept up the pressure,” forward and defenseman Carter Alonso (21) said.
The Eagles’ next game will take place on Sat. Nov. 8, during which the team will take on the Westside Mutts at Pines Ice Arena.
