The boys varsity soccer team won their game against Coral Glades High School in the district finals on Tues., Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. at Cumber Stadium. The team won 2-1 after the game went into overtime.
The boys won the district semi-finals 6-1 against Western High School on Fri., Jan. 23, which qualified them for the district finals.
The team started with the ball, and for the first half both teams fought hard to win with the district championship title on the line.Winning this game meant a lot to the students, players, coaches and parents alike.
During the first two quarters, both teams fought determinedly for the ball, but possession was mainly held by the team. With tensions running high, it was not until the third quarter that striker Mathew Rodriguez (25) scored the first goal, giving the team a 1-0 lead.
“When I scored, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I felt a rush of excitement and I wish I could live it again,” Rodriguez said.
Spectators were constantly cheering on their respective teams during this intense match, demonstrating their school spirit. Right up until the very end of the game the team maintained their 1-0 lead. However, in the last two minutes Coral Glades scored, tying the game and forcing it into overtime.
In overtime, the team came out on top; their second goal was scored by defenseman Liam Ulinksi (11). During the last minutes of the game, the team defended tirelessly, refusing to give up another goal and ensuring that when the whistle blew they would be victorious.
“I was really happy when he scored, and that we got that goal. Hearing the crowd cheer after was something surreal,” striker Gianni Piccone (16) said.
This game marked the end of their regular season success: they went almost undefeated, winning 11 out of 14 games, tying two and losing one. The girls varsity soccer team also won their district finals game on Mon., Jan. 26 against Spanish River High School 1-0. Thus, both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams are looking forward to competing at regionals in the near future.
At regionals, the boys will be competing against the Palmetto Panthers on Fri., Feb. 6 at 5 p.m., and the girls will be competing against Doral Academy on that day at the same time.
