Hospitality students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School heard from the Marriott and AC Hotel general manager near the Fort Lauderdale Airport, Mychal Milian, on Monday, Oct. 15. He spoke to students during seventh period in the media center and shared with them his journey in the hospitality industry.
Milian, who began studying hospitality at the age of 16, worked his way up to the position of general manager, demonstrating the diverse career opportunities available in the field. He gave students an overview of Marriott’s wide range of hotel brands, including select service, extended stay, full service and luxury.
“Each brand has its own unique features, and understanding those differences is key to delivering exceptional service,” Milian said. “Happy guests are what keep a hotel thriving.”
Milian discussed the difficulties hotel managers confront, including managing guest complaints and increasing employee turnover and the necessity of adjusting to significant interruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic. He also discussed the benefits of a profession in hospitality, such as travel advantages and discounts, despite the difficulties.
“One of the best parts of the job is getting to travel and experience the world at a lower cost,” Milian said.
The general manager also emphasized the value of hospitality education and strong communication skills.
“You have to create an experience that makes people feel special and want to return,” Milian said, referring to how to attract more patrons to hotel restaurants.
Milian’s presentation offered valuable insights into the hospitality industry, giving students a clear understanding of both the challenges and the rewarding opportunities the field has to offer for those willing to pursue it.
