On March 1 at 6 p.m., the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School women’s lacrosse team competed against West Boca High School in an away game.

MSD took the lead with a score of 18-3 in their first game of the season. This was not only the first game of the season, but also the first game since the tragic event that occurred at MSD. The team worked hard for the win and also for their school.

“We meshed really well as a team, coming together to finally play the first game of the season after not being able to play for two weeks,” freshman Lauren Figas (22) said.

With five of the games having to be rescheduled, the team pulled it together and secured the win. This was an emotional game for the lacrosse team, and being a part of a team and playing on the field was a monumental step towards healing, according to Figas.

“Playing the game today did not feel different than usual, especially because we have been practicing so much to get to the point we were at today,” Figas said. “Finally being able to play felt normal, like things were finally going back to the way they used to be.”

The team worked well together and supported each player. There was a large support system coming from the crowd, bleachers, parents and coaches. The team is excited that the season has started and proud that such challenges coming from the recent tragedy at MSD have not stopped their time on the field.

“Our team worked well together, especially because it was our first game,” Figas said. “Also, the weather was perfect; we had a beautiful sunset.”

The next game will be held at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, March 6 and will begin at 7 p.m.
