The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School varsity hockey team won their season opener with a score of 5-0 against Cypress Bay High School on Sunday, Oct. 27. The game took place at the FTL War Memorial.
A few minutes into the first period, forward Brandon Jones (97) scored the first point of the game and season. Cypress attempted to pass to their team but missed, giving the Eagles an opening.
Defenseman Bryce Hantman (10) attempted to make a shot but got blocked by Cypress. Shortly after, Cypress moved towards MSD’s goal, but the move was blocked by goalie Brandon Trokey (1).
“The best thing the team did today was they played as a team,” head coach Ian Kravitz said. “No selfishness whatsoever.”
Moving towards Cypress, defenseman Luke Mowery (8) scored, making the score 2-0 in favor of Douglas. After some back and forth on the ice, forward Michael Rozenblat (29) scored again, making the end score of period one 3-0.
Jones scored once more after the second period began, bringing the score to 4-0.
The Eagles remained in Cypress’s goal area for the majority of the game, until forward Cole McHugh (81) scored his first goal of his high school career after Cypress blocked two shots that Douglas players attempted.
“I did my best passing today because it led to a lot of our goals,” McHugh said. “The team had a lot of shots on net.”
The score at the end of the second period was 5-0. The Eagles came close to scoring at the beginning of the third period but shortly after, forward João Pedro Alves (98) was given a penalty.
The Eagles goalie made several blocks as Cypress fought to score, and Cypress was given a penalty along with MSD defensemen Ryan Trokey (91) and Bryce Hantman (10). As a result of the penalties, Cypress called for time out.
“The team played organized and we communicated really well,” Trokey said. “Our goalie played great too keeping the puck out of the net and the freshman played great for their first game contributing to the win.”
The game concluded with the Eagles winning the first game of the season, foreshadowing their next win on Monday, Oct. 28 against St.Thomas Aquinas High School at the Panthers Ice Den with a score of 7-4.
