[Brief] Legends of Destiny Step Team holds tryouts for 2023-2024 dance team

The Legends of Destiny Step Team held tryouts on Wednesday, Sept. 27 through Friday, Sept. 29 afterschool in the cafeteria. Members of the Step Team taught aspiring members important dance steps that are showcased in the team’s choreography.

The Legends of Destiny Step Team is a dance club at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where students are able to show their passion and expression through step. They perform at nearly all school events and are renowned for the diversity they bring into each one. Incorporating stomps, claps and loud voices into their performances, the Legends of Destiny Step Team sends a message through their rhythmic dancing.

“We’re looking for people with persistence and the ability to stay sharp in their dancing,” Legends of Destiny captain Dana Wilson said.

The team captains split up and taught groups of people parts of the dance. They would work patiently with their group, repeating the steps over again until everyone perfected them. By working slowly when teaching the combination, those auditioning felt that they could keep up and learn at their own pace.

“I feel like everybody around here is supportive and you’re able to learn because they’re really flexible with how they teach you,” sophomore Chardney Sydney said. “I feel satisfied when I get the steps and I’m able to do them without looking at anybody.”

After three days of learning and practicing the dances, the first round of cuts took place on Friday, Sept. 30. The second cuts will take place on Monday, Oct. 2.

The final tryout results will be released Monday, Oct. 9 via the Legends of Destiny Instagram page.
