Teachers and students at Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) were negatively affected by recent funding cuts that have caused online programs to be removed for teacher use. Among those at risk of being removed were Delta Math, Nearpod and IXL. Teachers and administration fought the district to reinstate Delta Math for the 2025-2026 school year.
Funding for schools in Broward County is decided by BCPS. These programs were supposed to be removed this year, but teachers who frequently use them expressed their concerns to administration.
Many teachers have implemented Delta Math in their classrooms over the last couple of years. Math teacher Shanthi Viswanathan, was upset when she learned the program would be cut.
“It would be a terrible injustice to math teachers if they officially take away Delta Math,” Viswanathan said.
Delta Math is primarily used as a review and practice tool for students who do not fully understand the concepts taught in class. The program provides practice questions and step-by-step instructions for solving each problem. This tool has proven useful for students who prefer working and learning at their own pace.
“It’s a great tool to test your patience and problem solving skills, so I’m glad it’s up and running again for this school year,” senior Taylor Rowe said.
The program also increased test scores majorly, with teachers seeing immense improvement.
“We said that [Delta Math] was really beneficial for us and our scores support that so [the district] looked at the data for our school,” Assistant Principal Anna Koltunova said. “They said it looks like it supports students so we’ll take it to the board to approve.”
School staff successfully fought the district to reinstate Delta Math, which will be back in Oct. In addition, IXL was reapproved for lower math courses only and Nearpod will likely be removed, although the decision is not final.
