Orchestra and chorus hosted their annual Winter Concert on Fri., Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The auditorium was decorated for the event, with winter scenery projected onto the stage backdrop and side walls. Both performances were directed by Stewart Rabin.
The orchestra began the concert with a rendition of “Mantras for String” by Richard Meyer. They then played “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3” by Johann Sebatian Bach before transitioning into “Idylls of Pegasus” by Meyer, followed by “Themes from Vivaldi’s Gloria” by Antonio Vivaldi.
“I enjoyed that we felt like a big family,” sophomore and cellist Megan Ward said. “We felt that way even in rehearsal.”
The orchestra finished off their musical selection with a violin and cello duet of “Sonata in G Minor for Violin and Cello” by George Frideric Handel, performed by sophomore and concertmaster Marina Fajardo and Ward, respectively.
Afterwards, the chorus began with a performance of “Carry the Light” by Andy Beck, followed by a performance of “Believe” from “The Polar Express” by Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri. They then continued into their performance of “Walking in the Air” by Howard Blake and ended their segment with a small group performance of “Everything Red and Green” by Anita Cracauer.
“I practiced constantly by listening to the music and learning others’ sections,” sophomore and soprano Mariana Betin Rojas said. “I believe that [it] is not only learning what you have to do, but understanding what others need to blend and connect better.”
The concert’s finale consisted of a combined performance by the chorus and orchestra. They played “White Winter Hymnal” by Fleet Foxes.
The audience was full of family and friends, excited to see pieces performed by loved ones. The performance was successful overall, with both chorus and orchestra performing well. They plan to have a spring concert at the end of next semester.
