The School Board of Broward County voted 7-2 on Feb. 7 to make Dr. Earlean Smiley the Interim Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools. The school board officially accepted former Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright’s resignation, as well.

Her resignation came after the SBBC and Cartwright came to a mutual agreement to separate in an unanimous vote on Jan. 24. The two came to a financial settlement on Feb. 2, in which Cartwright will receive over $260,000. 

Dr. Valerie Wanza is currently acting superintendent, while Smiley will be the district’s interim superintendent in the coming weeks. Smiley was formerly the principal of Blanche Ely High School.
