A costume contest is held every Halloween in the cafeteria during both A and B lunches. Teachers and students participate in two separate contests to exhibit their costumes.
For Administration, this year there was a specific theme surrounding family, which led to a group “Addams Family” costume.
“It’s themed after family, so they could dress like our administrative departments by going to dress up as a particular family,” Principal Michelle Kefford said. “We are family.”
The English department chose idioms as their theme, dressing up as commonly used phrases.
“We chose to and too because the theme for the English department was idioms. Mr. [Aaron] Avis and I wanted to partner up, so putting to and too together seemed like a good option,” speech and debate teacher Jacob Abraham said.
Some teachers chose to allude to real world issues through their costumes. For example, social studies teacher Elizabeth Zilokowski dressed as one of the Louvre robbers, a popular social media topic at the moment.
“Opportunities for kids to express themselves and show community, realizing that other people who are working in the halls with them are also humans who have interests and bring humanity into classrooms,” Zilokowski said.
In the cafeteria, students and teachers lined up to participate in the costume contest, which was voted on by those in attendance. The votes are counted based on the volume of the applause.
Senior Brianna Alexe as Marie Antoinette and junior Nevaeh Lubrin as the Girl with Stripes from David Shanon’s book “A Bad Case of Stripes” were a close tie, but, ultimately, Alexe was the winner. The winning teachers were Advanced Placement (AP) Language teacher Coral Bachen, who dressed as raining cats and dogs, and AP Literature teacher Andrea Kowalski-Rospierski, who dressed as pants on fire.
“I think it is important to the school because it helps foster community and motivates people to want to go to school and show spirit,” Alexe said.
Halloween brings the students and staff together as one family. Participating in a fun event that brings school spirit and allows people to have fun on campus. It is a way of bringing community into the halls through a commonly celebrated holiday that many love.
