On Dec. 10, Disney+ released the first two episodes of season two of the hit show “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” The show is based on the five Greek mythology-inspired novels written by Rick Riordan.
The first Percy Jackson novel was published in June 2005. Since then, four more books have been released, as well as another series existing in the same universe, such as the “Heroes of Olympus” series. Two movies based on the books have been made as well, but they were not very popular because they left out important scenes and did not capture the books’ cleverness.
The “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” show follows Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, played by Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jefferies and Aryan Simhadri respectively.
In the first season, “The Lightning Thief,” Percy always knew he was different from other kids, having attended multiple private schools and struggled with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia. It shocked Percy when he found out that he is a halfblood and his dad is an Olympian God. He also found out that his best friend, Grover, is a satyr sent to protect him from monsters because Halfbloods are widely hated by them.
Zeus assumes that Percy stole his Master Bolt because he is a forbidden child. A forbidden child means he is the son of either Hades, Zeus or Posiedon. These three Gods made a pact to never have any more children because they were getting too powerful. But, Posiedon broke that pact when he had Percy. Because of this, monsters are trying to kill him and get the Master Bolt back.
Percy and Grover go to a camp for Halfbloods. They then meet a fellow camper, Annabeth, daughter of Athena, and all three plan to go on a quest to find Zeus’ Master Bolt. After that, they go back to their normal lives with their parents.
In season two, Tyson, a new character, played by Daniel Diemer, is introduced. Tyson is a cyclops and loves Percy and his mom. He goes to Percy’s school and lives with him. Other people cannot see that he is a cyclops because of the Mist, which hides mystical creatures and mystical weapons so normal people cannot see them.
Percy has had a dream about Grover and knows that he is in trouble. When Annabeth comes to see Percy she tells him she has had a similar dream. Percy thinks it is about Grover as well, but her dream was about Camp Halfblood being in danger. Percy seems to be especially worried because Grover does not ask for or need help a lot.
Percy, Annabeth and Tyson then all rush to camp to ensure it is not in trouble. They discover that the sacred tree that keeps the monsters out of the camp is dying, and the only way to heal it is to retrieve the Golden Fleece. The Golden Fleece is on Polyphemus’ island where Grover is being imprisoned. It’s unsettling to think that the tree protecting all the halfbloods and the camp itself is at risk of being destroyed by monsters.
While that is happening, Poseidon tells the camp that Tyson is in fact his son, which means that he is Percy’s half brother. Percy has mixed feelings about this — although he likes Tyson, he also feels slightly uncomfortable that he is a cyclops. It is understandable that Percy feels this way, but he definitely should have tried to do a better job of hiding it.
Percy and Annabeth realize they need to go on another quest to get the Golden Fleece and save Grover. However, when assigning the quest, the old camp activities director tells Annabeth that Percy cannot go on this quest because it is a trap for him. He also tells her that she cannot tell Percy about this. This seems somewhat unnecessary since Percy has already been on a quest and has faced something like this before.
Percy feels betrayed when he finds out he is not picked by Clarisse La Rue, daughter of Ares, to go on the quest, but Annabeth was. He knows he has to be the one to save Grover so he decides to go by himself. Annabeth finds him and tries to explain what Chiron had told her, but the new camp director, Tantalus, has enacted a new rule: anyone leaving or entering camp, besides the three that have been chosen to go on the quest, will be killed.
So, when Tantalus sees Percy and Annabeth outside of the camp, he tries to fire at them with a crossbow. Fortunately, Tyson comes along and saves them by getting them all in a boat and heading away from camp.
Fans have been waiting a year to see the new season, and it lives up to expectation. Fans were talking about how much detail went into Annabeth’s hair this season and how much Percy has grown. While they left out some minor details in the show that were in the book, it was an overall great start to the season. A new episode will be dropping every Wed. until Jan. 26, 2026.
