Don Toliver’s new album, “OCTANE,” was released on Jan. 22, marking a major moment in the artist’ career. “OCTANE” was Toliver’s fifth studio project and the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The 18-track album blends Toliver’s signature Hip-Hop and R&B music with catchy beats.
The album title “OCTANE” is intended to draw a connection to energy and speed, matching the fast and exciting feeling of many of its songs. Toliver got inspiration from car culture and high speed imagery, shaping “Octane” into an exciting listening experience designed to feel like a ride.
Toliver also worked with many popular artists on the album, including Travis Scott, Yeat, Rema, Teezo Touchdown and Sahbabii. By featuring these artists, Toliver added variety to his album, making it more interesting and diverse.
“E85” is the album’s high energy opening track with a melodic trap beat that feels like riding fast on an open road. In this song, Toliver raps about speed, money, luxury and living life in the moment.
Flipping a familiar pop sample into a fresh vibe, “Body” is a catchy song that delves into romance and the thrill of a new relationship. This song in particular has gained a lot of traction, especially since it samples a familiar melody: “Rock your Body” by Justin Timberlake. This sample allows the song to capitalize off of the mixing of new and nostalgic sounds.
Both “E85” and “Body” have been streamed a lot, especially on social media, helping “OCTANE” reach more people and earn its tracks a spot in people’s playlists.
Songs like “Rendezvous” and “Tiramisu” have a slow and smooth R&B-style to them with a laid-back groove. Meanwhile, Toliver sings about romance and late night drives.
In contrast, “ATM” is a futuristic trap track with a punchy flow and hypnotic synths; its lyrics explore wealth, fast-paced lifestyles and late-night, cinematic energy.
“Long Way to Calabasas” stands out on “OCTANE” for its reflective tune. It is more personal to Toliver, as he smoothly sings about how he got to where he is now on the track. Toliver explores finding inner peace, reflecting on his life and navigating complex emotions amid success. This song is more emotional than the other high energy songs in the album.
“Rosary” is a collaboration between Toliver and Scott about admiration and connection. Both of the artists’ rap styles work together cohesively, producing an amazing and memorable song. Toliver also worked with Touchdown to produce “All the Signs” –– a woozy, mid-tempo track with eclectic vocals that talks about romance, intimacy and the complexity of his current relationship with well-known artist Kali Uchis.
In “Call Back,” Toliver mixes catchy hooks with brooding production. This song is centered around intense attraction, longing and admiration for a woman’s physical appearance and character. The lyrics entail a desire for attention, boasting about a wealthy, carefree lifestyle and the pursuit of romantic connection, characterized by the repeating line, “When you gon’ call back?”
“Tuition” is a sultry, moody song that portrays a woman needing to work to pay for her “tuition.” The song focuses on the hustle, financial struggles and motivation behind her actions.
On the other hand, “K9 (feat. SahBabii)” is a playful collaboration with interesting beat switches. The song is centered on an intense, almost intoxicating relationship, using the analogy of a canine waiting for its partner to return home. It plays with themes of loyalty and longing on top of a slightly somber tone, featuring distinct, melodic production and romantic imagery.
“Excavator” is a track built with layered production. Its high-energy melodic rap track is centered on intense ambition, massive money accumulation and a luxurious, reckless lifestyle. Using the metaphor of digging deep with an excavator, the song highlights rising to the top while partying and staying ahead of critics.
“Gemstone” is a revved-up song with confident energy that has bold hooks and focuses on themes of luxury, success and fast-paced living.
“Opposite” blends attitude with a smooth flow. With its slick, melodic number, the song explores themes of extreme wealth and luxurious lifestyles, like some of Toliver’s other songs on the album. The lyrics also highlight the artist’s success, fast cars and romantic encounters while bragging about being “overly lit”. “TMU” (Turn Me Up) is a melodic song with a reflective, wistful feeling, focusing on devotion to a significant other and reflecting on fatherhood and family. The lyrics emphasize wanting to spend time with his partner, featuring references to navigating life together.
“Pleasure’s Mine” has a groove-oriented track that leans into late-night vibes and centers on themes of toxic romance, infidelity and the thrill of deception. The lyrics talk about Toliver’s admission of lying repeatedly to a partner while indulging in luxury and navigating emotional chaos. The song portrays a “crazy” relationship.
“Sweet Home” explores the conflict between a fast-paced lifestyle and the desire for genuine emotional relationships. It highlights a cycle of using travel, luxury and bravado to escape emotional uncertainty, while reflecting on the comfort of returning to his roots.
Because his new album is garnering much attention, Toliver announced a U.S. and Canada tour. The tour starts on May 8 in Orlando and ends on July 5 in Denver, stopping in big cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Toronto in between. Toliver will bring out special guests like SahBabii, SoFaygo and CHASE B. Fans can expect lots of energy, cool lights and all their favorite songs live.
While some listeners praise his albums’ energetic sound, others feel parts of it do not always reach the heights of his past work. Instead, they believe that a few of the songs sound similar to old ones, such as those from the “Life of DON” album. Although songs from “OCTANE” may not be the same as some of his past hits, the album still shows Toliver’s creativity and strong talent.
Overall, “OCTANE” proves that Toliver is improving his music and experimenting with new styles. The album keeps listeners engaged by mixing fun songs with meaningful ones. His strong voice and memorable lines make the album more enjoyable on every listen.
Even though some fans may not love every song, the album still shows Toliver’s confidence and dedication to his art. “OCTANE” helps Toliver stand out in the music industry and shows that he has a bright future ahead and more acclaimed albums to come.
