Pedal to the Metal. Walking into school from the bus loop entrance, senior Mariana Giraldo passes through the mandatory metal detector screening at MSD on Sept. 24. Broward County Public Schools passed a new policy requiring all students to pass through metal detectors that went into effect on Aug. 12. “I think they are pointless since they don’t really go off for everything,” Giraldo said. “You can have a big water bottle, and it doesn’t detect it. I feel like it misses things and is a waste of time.”

Recently retired social studies teacher Carla Verba stands with an award in hand, which she received for the impact she has made in students' lives. Verba taught for 32 years at MSD and has developed a deep connection to the school in the process. “I think I will miss the school itself the most," Verba said. "I’ve been here for so long that I’ve seen all of the changes that have been made for the better and better."
