MSD Eagles win against Archbishop McCarthy High School Mavericks 5-2

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School hockey team played against Archbishop McCarthy High School on Friday, Nov. 10 at 1:30 p.m.. The match took place at Amerant Bank Arena.

The match began with a score from the Archbishop Mavericks in the opening minutes of the first period. Sooner than later, they scored again with nine minutes left in the period, leading 2-0.

Although the Mavericks were leading, the Eagles gained an advantage due to the penalty given to forward Kaden Richard (68) on the Mavericks.

As the period was about to end, the Mavericks almost scored again, but the shot was blocked by the Eagles goalie Matthew Schreier (98).

As the second period begins, another player from the Mavericks earns a penalty, opening up the ice for the Eagles to score.

Shortly after, the Eagles scored. Defensive man Nathan Shelowitz (29) earns the point for the team, making the score 1-2, in favor of the Mavericks.

In the last minute of the second period, the Eagles goalie Matthew Schreier (98) blocked two shots attempted by the Mavericks trying to score.

As the third period begins, forward Von Seys (28) ties the game with the Mavericks, making the score 2-2.

“I scored two goals, and used my voice to let teammates know I’m open,” Seys said.

In addition to the Mavericks’ third penalty of the game, the play also resulted in an injury to Ryan Trokey (91), an Eagles forward and defensive player, who had to be helped off the ice. Everyone from both teams showed their support for Trokey.

“I went for the puck and the kid turned me around from behind and my foot jammed into someone’s skate and bent down injuring my ankle,” Trokey said. “The team was able to come back and score 5 unanswered goals and gain the momentum for the rest of the game.”

As the match went on, the Eagles finally stole the lead. Forward Slater Szirovatka (27) scored for the Eagles to give them their first lead of the night, in the last ten minutes of third period.

“I can improve for the next game by being more puck aware,” Szirovatka said. “Where the puck is and where it will be in the next 5 seconds so I can position myself, keeping my head on a swivel and being aware of different players.”

Shortly after taking the lead, forward Sianu Hogue (3) scored putting the Eagles ahead by two points, the score was 4-2 with seven minutes left.

With five minutes left in the last period, forward Von Seys (28) scored his second goal of the match, making the Eagles end with a final score of 5-2, winning against the Mavericks.

The Eagles next match will be on Monday, Nov. 13, at Panthers Ice Den against Cypress Bay High School.
