Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) presented fans of rap with a true performance surrounding the theme of a championship. With artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, SZA, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, Isaiah Rashad, SiR, Lance Skiiiwalker and more. The Championship Tour created a unbeatable setlist.
Though the concert was well anticipated, some people were let down. R&B artist SZA announced that she was undergoing serious issues with her vocal chords a couple days before their show in West Palm Beach on May 23. SZA received a lot of backlash from angry and upset fans on Twitter.
TDE started their first ever full label tour at 7:30 at the Coral Sky Amphitheatre. This venue is outdoors, having both chair seating and lawn seating available. Those sitting on the lawn brought blankets and chairs to lay and sit on and paid only 50 dollars for a ticket.
With popular songs such as “Studio” and “That Part”, Schoolboy Q opened for Kendrick Lamar and received a huge response from the audience. After a long introductory sequence involving a heartbeat like allusion on the front screen and flashing lights, the rapper came on stage with his well-known song “DNA”.
The crowd went crazy, appreciating that he started off his set with a song off his latest album, “DAMN.” Lamar killed it, doing different versions of his songs. The sets gave the audience something to dance and sing along to.
Jay Rock made an appearance back on the stage during Lamar’s performance for their popular song “King’s Dead”. Though the song missed well-liked rapper Future since he was not on tour, they hyped up the crowd enough for Lamar’s final song.
Lamar chose to end his concert with the most anticipated song on his list, “HUMBLE.” He performed the hyped up song twice, once with the audience singing every word acapella, and once rapped by himself. The whole arena sung along which impressed Lamar.
“You all might be the loudest,” Lamar said to the audience.
Overall, the Championship Tour was an exciting concert with all different kinds of rap performances. The special effects were great and it definitely was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. Between songs like “m.A.A.d city” and “B**** don’t kill my vibe”, attendees had an amazing experience singing along and dancing.
